We are committed to improving the sustainability of our organisation and meeting the goals and vision of both the Uniting Church and UnitingCare Queensland. We have been undertaking different steps to become more sustainable as an organisation.
At the beginning of 2013 we established a goGreen team to promote and coordinate the development and implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives across UnitingCare Community. Throughout the past two years the team has been meeting bi-monthly and have been involved in a number of initiatives and events such as Ride2Work Day, Mr Switch, Earth Hour, and National Recycling Week as well as in-office initiatives to improve energy efficiency, water, waste management and printing.
We were successful in securing funding from the federal government’s Community Energy Efficiency Program to help kick-start our green initiatives. This funding is being used to implement energy efficiency retro-fits in 16 of our properties. The sites are a mixture of offices and Lifeline Shops and Warehouses in regional areas.
The goGreen team conducted a staff behaviours survey to find out what staff members were doing to be more environmentally sustainable and what areas staff thought we could improve on. The top three suggested activities were recycling, switching off appliances and solar energy.
Our goGreen team consists of staff and volunteers from across many of our service areas and locations.
